LIE DETECTOR TEST: TELL THE TRUTH Detects the guilty, exonerates the innocent

Lie Detector test, also known as “polygraph test”, has been used almost all over the world for more than a few decades now. In the United States, most companies and branches of government agencies have been using this as one of the most powerful and effective scientific tools in investigations for a hundred of years already.

In the past few years, the use of lie detector test equally proliferate as security risks rises. Because of the great effect in detecting and deterring fraud in the workplace, other companies started making it as a business enterprise too.

On the other hand, many people still do not know about Lie Detector Test. They have been fascinated about it. Many businessmen, entrepreneurs and executives got even mesmerized on Lie Detector as it truly helps them solve various corporate cases. Hence, most of the best-managed companies employ such techniques as their new trend for decision making as well as to deter wrongdoings in the workplace.

Lie Detector Test is used by the CIA, FBI, US Secret Service, Law Enforcement and best-managed companies for Pre-employment Screening, Periodic Audit, Pair Testing Investigation and Specific Case Investigation. This is also used for criminal, civil and private investigations.

For Pre-employment Screening: Lie Detector Test is used as a tool to screen the most valuable asset – the right people especially when the position requires a high degree of honesty and integrity; when honesty and confidence are vested on the occupant of the position; and when immediate information about the job applicant is needed. Likewise, to know the problems that might interfere with the job and to help the companies establishing the veracity of the information in the applicants’ resume.

For Periodic Audit: The Lie Detector Test becomes the most applicable approach to reassess the present employees and determine their honesty, loyalty to the company and way to discover any activities inimical to the company.
For Pair Testing Investigation: Lie Detector Test is a technique to determine the veracity of the two contradictory statements of two subjects, thereby, reducing expenses of establishing the truth.

For Specific Case Investigation: An in-depth and thorough investigation method of shedding light on any case, the lie detector, detects the guilty and exonerates the innocent.

LIE DETECTOR OR POLYGRAPH. The term “polygraph” literally means “many writing”. The name refers to the manner on which selected physiological activities are simultaneously recorded. It is an accurate and delicately engineered instrument that records blood pressure, blood volume, pulse rate, sweating and breathing used for investigation, honesty check and pre-employment screening. Polygraph Examiners may use the conventional instrument, sometimes referred to as analog instruments, or computerized polygraph instruments.  The examiner must have a college degree, polygraph and scientific interrogation training, experience, integrity and adheres strictly to the Code of Ethics and Standards and Principles of Practice of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the world's oldest developer of industry standards.

Accuracy and Reliability. The Treasury Department funded experiments showed that polygraph to be 90% accurate. In more recent research, the confirmed average validity was shown to be 96%. Only 4 to 10% of the results were declared inconclusive and almost no error.

Admissibility in Court. U.S. Court of Appeals in 1989 in U.S. vs. Piccionnona declared in precedent setting decision that “the Science of Polygraph has progressed to a level of acceptance sufficient to allow the use of polygraph evidence”. U.S. Supreme court in 1993, in William Daubert vs. Merrel Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., adopted polygraph expert scientific testimony in federal trial and in U.S. vs. Scheffer trial in 1998, the polygraph provides another accurate form of circumstantial evidence of consciousness of guilt and found it sufficiently reliable to be admitted.

In the Philippines, the first and the Number 1 industrial lie detector company is Truth Verifier Systems, Inc. (TVSI). Its President, Capt. Conrado G. Dumlao, decided to open such business to address the needs of the security industry to combat the growing fraud activities as well as to strengthen the pre-employment screening. Capt. Dumlao is listed as an active Professional Polygraph Examiner and International Liaison Committee Member of the American Polygraph Association, U.S.A.

TVSI was awarded by the Philippine National Police as the first “Hall of Fame Best Private Detective Agency” for being the most consistent recipient of the award. Its professional and skilled examiners also cope with the changes by continuous trainings and workshops. Established in the Philippines in 1966, it is now 45 years in quality service. It is also the first ISO 9001:2008 Certified Company for lie detector testing, detective and investigative services, and training. It has also been recognized for its exemplary service, expertise, integrity and truthful reporting by numerous local associations making it also known globally through satisfied clientele.

Lie Detector really helps companies solve corporate fraud and dishonesty. It also helps to deter employees from committing activities inimical to the company thereby, minimizing company losses brought by fraud, internal theft and/or other forms of illegal acts.

Great proof was from the Chief Polygraphist of Truth Verifier Systems, Inc., Beatriz S. Corpuz, wherein a lot of subjects have confessed to her to have actually participated if not the one involved on the certain case using the Scientific Way of Detecting Deception. Ms. Corpuz relayed two of her extraordinary stories.

Sometime in 2005, a Bank Manager wanted to know who took the missing ten bundles of P500 bill, each bundle amounting to P50,000.00 with a total of P500,000.00, tied with a rubber band. Allegedly, said money was left on top of the files of Bank Statements inside the vault. It was discovered missing after the inventory on the same day.

Three subjects underwent the Lie Detector Test, wherein one of them had strong reactions to the relevant questions. Ms.  Corpuz interrogated him right after the first set of the examination. Eventually, the subject confessed to have taken the money. He claimed that he saw the banker holding bundles of money while searching for a plastic at the lower portion of the cabinet. The banker accidentally left the said missing bundles of money on the floor. When the subject noticed it, he immediately got it and kept it inside his pants.

He added that the guard on duty failed to notice the money on the subject’s body when the latter underwent body frisking before going out of the bank premises.

With Lie Detector Test, culprits have no way of denying or beating the instrument. It takes a skilled examiner to interpret the chart recordings of the lie detector.

Consider also the story of a guest of a certain hotel in Makati City, who complained of her missing money amounting to ¥200,000. It was allegedly kept inside an envelope and placed underneath her couch inside her room.

A room attendant, who was pointed to have cleaned the room prior to the missing money, underwent the examination to shed light on the case. He denied the allegation and even bet the lives of his entire family just to convince the examiner that he was innocent. But with the aid of the instrument, he was found deceptive.

With the interrogation prowess of Ms. Corpuz, the subject eventually admitted to have taken the money. The subject then returned the money. However, it was only ¥27,000 because he already gave the other part to his mother.

TVSI has truly contributed a lot to the Investigation/Security Industry by helping companies in solving cases within the workplace as well as deterring further occurrence of fraud because of the widespread use of Lie Detector Testing.

The company has been invited to corporate events to make live demonstrations on computerized lie detector test. TVSI has also been featured in numerous tv shows such as: Homeboy, John N Shirley, Nuts Entertainment, Pinoy Idol, Sweet Life, Handsome Journey, Moment of Truth, Misteryo  and in the radio program of DJ Mo (Mo Twister) on Magic 89.9 FM station. At present, TVSI’s skilled lie detector examiners regularly appear in the Don’t Lie To Me segment of Showbiz Central in GMA-7.
